It’s no secret many of us LOVE shopping at Marshalls and TJ Maxx. From clothes to kids toys to home decor, you can find so much there at great prices. In this article, we’re going to talk about some of the little known secrets to getting the BEST possible deal at TJ Maxx and Marshalls. These will BLOW YOUR MIND, so get ready!
- Designer brands! In the past, name brand items (ie Kate Spade, Michael Kors, etc) were factory seconds or overstocked items. Now, that is not always the case. These designers actually design exclusive items/patterns just for TJ Maxx/Marshalls!
- Beauty items – Makeup and skincare are GREAT deals to find at Marshalls and TJ Maxx. The problem is though, you don’t know how long the makeup has sat on a store shelf somewhere else, or in a warehouse. Cosmetics don’t last forever, most have a short shelf life (6-12 months). Who wants to score an amazing deal on mascara only to find the tube all dried out? Ugh! While you’re shopping, head over to {Cosmetic Check} Select the brand, batch number and code from the dropdown menu and BOOM! It’ll tell you if that item in your hand is actually past its best used by date.
- Best days to shop! – As you may have guessed, weekends are the craziest, most crowded days to shop. Monday and Tuesdays are iffy as they are restocking with new merchandise. Hit the stores early morning Tuesday-Thursday for lower crowds and new items to peruse.
- Beware of Fake Prices – I’ll bet like most of us, in the past you’ve seen those “compare to” tags and been intrigued at the amazing savings. There have been class action lawsuits in the past against TJ Maxx/Marshalls and other retailers from using these “fake sale” tactics. In short, the “compare to” tags mean nothing, just look at the actual price you’d pay and you can decide if it’s a good value to you.
- Price adjustments on damaged items – If you see an item that is slightly damaged (like a chip in a cup, tear in a blouse, etc) AND is does not have AS IS written on the tag, you CAN ask the cashier for a price adjustment. If it is marked AS IS they have taken note of the damage and no further price adjustments can happen.
- What are the BEST items to grab at Marshalls? – Pet items! Get your cats and dogs new beds, dishes, treats and toys for less! This is one shopping stop your pet totally approves of! I once got a dog bed for $9; that same bed was at our local pet store for $50!
- What are the WORST items to shop for? Bath towel sets!
- Mark your Calendar and DON’T miss this! – Twice a year, Marshalls and TJ Maxx run a MASSIVE clearance sale. This happens at the end of winter (late March) and the end of summer (think late August/early September). Get a heads up on when your local stores will have their semi annual clearance sale by signing up for their marketing emails right on the Marshalls or TJ Maxx website.
- Know the price stickers – White price stickers are their normal and every day pricing. Red stickers means it’s on a markdown which is great but really watch for the YELLOW price stickers. A yellow sticker means final markdown and once it’s gone, it’s gone!
- Don’t Forget to Price Compare – Marshalls or TJ Maxx may not always be the lowest price, especially on items sold at many retailers (like beauty products, or hair care). Whip out your phone and check the price on Amazon while you shop. Just use the little barcode icon in your search bar right on top of your Amazon app. You can even search Google Images and see at a glance prices at other retailers very quickly.
- Know Your Stores! – Many stores even in a close together area have a specialty or a niche. I have a store nearby that has a TON of great deals on kitchen items. Another location close by is the mecca for toy bargains.
- You can SHOP ONLINE! – This is such a great development. If you see something you like and they don’t have your size – check their website! You just might find it online. I even got a FREE shipping code for signing up for emails.
