With summer vacation finally here, it really is nice to have a break from the hustle and bustle of the school year — especially after what the last few years has brought, am I right?! It can be easy though to get bored at home with all that unstructured time with the kids. It can be a common pitfall to spend money “out of boredom” if we’re not careful. Keep your savings goals on track with these active, low-cost, fun, and even FREE things to do with the kids this summer!
P.s. Yup… This was talked about on my segment on Good Morning America.
- Create a Playground Tour Bucket list – Pull up Google Maps on your phone and search for Playgrounds. Make a bucket list to visit playgrounds in your area within a 30-60 minute driving time. Pack a picnic lunch from home and make an afternoon of it!
- GeoCaching – GeoCaching is like a real-life treasure hunt, your kids will love it! Use the GeoCaching phone app to lead you to real like treasure boxes. When you find these small treasure boxes you’ll open them to find small toys, stickers and collectors coins. Sometimes there is a log book you can sign and date and even a place to log online where you’ve been. It’s fun, educational and FREE! For instance, a quick search using the Geocaching app showed me there is nearly 2800 locations near me!
- All Trails app. – Use the All-Trails app to discover local hiking trails that you didn’t even know existed. Trails have pictures, difficulty levels and reviews. You can filter your search by biking trails, wheelchair friendly, even dog trails to get your furry friends in on the fun.
- Your Local Library – Libraries not only have fun, free and inexpensive children’s programs and camps all summer but many also offer loan out passes for FREE or low cost admission to state parks, museums, amusement centers and more. Don’t forget to also check out DVD rentals for a FREE movie night!
- State Park Passes – State park day use passes can add up quickly. However, many state parks allow you to buy annual passes which can save you quite a bit (even hundreds of dollars annually) if you go there often.
- Discount Days (cheap movies, museums and more!) – Many Children’s Museums and even movie theaters offer weekly “summer discount” days. Check your local or nationwide chain theaters websites for info on summer discount days. Often you can catch a movie at least one day a week for $1.50-$5 a person!
- Visit Your Local Fire Station – Most local fire stations are happy to give the kiddos a tour and talk about their jobs and the importance of fire safety. They may even be able to look around inside the fire engines!
- Free bowling All Summer! – The Kids Bowl Free program is back. There are bowling centers nationwide offering FREE games of bowling for kids. See my post all about it and how to sign up by going {HERE}
- Day Camps at your Local Parks and Recreation! Check out your local Parks and Recreation at your town or village office for free or low-cost summer camps and activities. Sometimes you don’t have to be a resident of a certain town to register BUT it may cost a bit more than what they’d charge a resident. {Go HERE to learn more}
- Kids Eat Free – Enjoy family time where no one has to cook or do the dishes! Check out Kids Eat Free to see which restaurants near you offer FREE Kids meals or a generous discount. {Go HERE to Kids Eat Free}
That’s it! So no matter where you live surely a few of these ideas if not all of them will offer some free or low cost family fun. Most importantly, enjoy and soak up that quality family time together.
