Walmart is an AMAZING place to shop for clearance items. Anything you may want from grocery items to toys to clothing for the family can often be found on clearance. Clearance shopping isn’t quite as simple as just heading to a dedicated clearance aisle and taking a look. Read on for all my BEST tips and tricks to get the most out of your shopping and score HIDDEN clearance deals!
- YMMV – Your miles will vary. Each Walmart store is operated independently of each other. Simply put, each store is able to make their own decisions about when and how much they mark down items.
- Toy Clearance! – Walmart is an amazing place to clearance shop for toys with prices going up to 90% off! Best time to start looking for toy markdowns is July (to make room for new toys for the holidays) and again at the end of December (when they need to clear out what didn’t sell for the holiday season.)
- Become a hashtag ninja – Follow these hashtags on Instagram to follow other Walmart clearance aficionados. Let Your Fingers Do the Walking – Just about every bargain hunter knows about Brickseek. If you don’t – no sweat, here’ s the rundown! Brickseek is an online database where you can search inventory online. Head over to Brickseek and you can search for clearance near you at Walmart and several other stores. Search by zip code or SKU (item number) number. Let’s look at an example.
Pioneer Woman is certainly one of those really popular items lots of us love and collect, and you can get some amazing clearance deals as they markdown the older items to make room for new ones. This screenshot above shows this Kitchen Gadget and Crock set with the SKU #. Then I put in my zip code to see what’s available in stores near me.
Yes! I might be able to score it in store for up to 75% off! The top result shows more than 6 in stock at the store on East Ave. If you see “limited stock” like in the second result shown, there is a good chance it’s gone. Brickseek isn’t up to the minute. It’s a valuable tool though since it can show you a good snapshot of what your area stores have, so you can focus your time and effort in the places that most likely will have your deals.
Price Matching! – Yes, this is a little known secret. You can price match in store Walmart.com’s price, AND Target and Amazon. Unfortunately, again since Walmart brick and mortar stores operate independently of each other you can’t price match one store’s price to another.
Treasure Hunting! – Not everything will have a clearance price sticker or sign. Scan scan scan using your Walmart mobile app. A little known hack: Sometimes when a manufacturer changes packages (especially with grocery or health and beauty items) they will clearance out the older design/packaging. It may not be marked so be sure you scan if you find different types of packaging for the same products.
Set your Calendars! – The biggest markdowns happen through the 1st to the 5th of a new month. Shop beginning of the day! Remember big discounts tend to sell out fast and there’s definitely lots of shoppers out there looking for them. The early bird gets the worm! 😉
Stock the pantry and freezer! – Score nice grocery markdowns the day BEFORE the best by date on bakery items. Watch for those yellow markdown tags. Remember bakery items usually freeze well so you can stock up for parties and get togethers.
Holiday clearance: – Up to 90% off after a holiday has passed. Check all those seasonal aisles and scan anything and everything. Watch especially for seasonal items like holiday themed hand soap and personal care gift sets. Remember you can break up those sets and use the products in your own household.
Make friends with the manager – If you are friendly and can strike up a friendship with the store manager or department manager they may be willing to give you a heads up on when markdowns are coming!
Rollback VS Clearance: – Rollback prices are temporary price cuts and will eventually go back to their original price. Clearance prices will not increase but it could sell out!
Clearance is ONLINE too! – Online Clearance hunting tip: search “clearance” in the search bar of walmart.com, then sort the results low to high. Lastly, filter “sold by Walmart”.
